Narrative
Backboned Animals (Phylum Chordata) are the most advanced group of animals on earth. These animals are characterized by having a spinal cord or backbone. Most members have a clearly defined brain that controls the organism through a spinal cord. Fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals are in this phylum.
Currently, some taxonomists believe that the fish should be divided into two groups (sharks and regular fishes) and that there are some other primitive groups in the phylum such as hagfish or lampreys.

| Field Guide to African Wildlife | Alden, Peter C. | With 575 color pictures primarily of reptiles, birds, and mammals, this is a very good book for an overview of animal life on the African continent. |
| Encyclopedia of Animals - Simon and Shuster | Whitfield, Dr. Philip | This 616 page book comprises and excellent survey of the chordates of the world. The common and scientific name, range, and habitat are given for each depicted species . Furthermore there is a paragraph of text and an excellent color illustration for each depicted species. There are about three and sometimes four species shown per page in this large format book, so one can estimate that almost two thousand species are included. Fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals are covered. This is an excellent book! |
| Macmillan Illustrated Animal Encyclopedia | Whitfield, Dr. Philip | Although the scope of this work is quite large, it still has sufficient material to be of interest. Fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals are covered. The species counts by families and the inclusion of representatives of most families, make this an excellent reference. |
| Illustrated Guide to Marine Fish of the World | Beer, Amy-Jane | This overview of about 450 species of marine creatures ranges from corals through Crustacea to sharks, rays, and conventional fish, and even mammals. Most species have an excellent color image, good text, and a table overview of important characteristics. A distribution map is frequently provided. The book is divided into three sections: (1) Seashores, etc, , (2) shallow seas, and reefs, and (3) deep ocean. We would have preferred that it be in taxonomic sequence . All in all this is an excellent large format introductory work to the marine creatures of the world. |
